"The aim of abuse, unlike the aim of sadism, is not the pleasure of inflicting pain, but the need to control. Domination is the end in itself. While a man may explain his actions by saying he lost control, what he actually did was gain it." Message from the founder of Wonderful WomenFor almost ten years I was married to a man who physically abused me. The marriage finally ended after my ex-husband beat our nine year old daughter and the South African Child Protection Unit stepped in. Were it not for the CPU's intervention, I shudder to think what would have happened because as it is with most other domestic violence cases , the violence in our situation was escalating. Yet despite this, I was unable to break free, even though I was the family breadwinner. So I know from bitter experience how difficult it is to leave an abusive partner. However, looking back, I know I should have done it sooner; if not for my own sake, then for the sake of my daughter. SueClick here to read 'Abuse begets abuse', a poem I wrote for my daughter. |
