Business wardrobe capsule

No matter what line of work you’re in, you will be perceived more positively if you reflect a polished and professional business look.

To build a work wardrobe capsule, start with the basics:

  • If you’re in an industry that requires power dressing, make sure you have 4 to 5 quality suits in your best neutral colours (Black, Grey, Navy, Brown, etc…depending on your undertones. See April 2009 issue of INFORM).
  • If you’re in a more relaxed environment go for a combination of neutral pants or straight skirts with different styles of jackets.

Now add 5 to 7 tops, shirts or blouses in your best colours. For a dash of creativity introduce patterns in your tops or scarves, but be aware of shapes in the patterns. Try repeating a facial feature in the design lines but never your face shape. For instance round faces and a polka dot scarf or inverted triangle faces and sharp diagonal lines don’t work!

You may wish to add some shift, classic or wrap solid dresses to the capsule and experiment with creating different styles:
Dress + cardigan or fitted jacket
Dress + undershirt
Dress + scarf

While shoes and bags should be of the best quality you can afford, preferably leather, other accessories should be minimal so they won’t act as a distraction.

And last, but not least, consider the Top at all times; the Time of the day, Occasion and People you’ll be meeting on that day. Do bear in mind that if you’re going to be attending a business dinner with clients and management, “business” should overrule “night”.
