Lipstick wisdom – candy pink or nude?

Cotton candy and nude lips are a knockout with a tan. Balance understated lips by going slightly heavier on the eyes. Or you could risk looking washed out.

If you have cool undertones, like Camilla Belle and Lindsey Lohan, you will look best wearing cool pinks with a blue rather than orange base. But if you have warm undertones like Katherine Heigl and Kim Kardashian, nude shades with peachy undertones will give you more of that gorgeous healthy glow. (Pink Angel by MAC is apparently one of Kim’s favourites.) Warm undertones have an orange/yellow base.

Believe it or not, if you apply your lipstick first and liner second, you will get a much better lip because once you apply your lipstick, it becomes easier to see where the liner should go. Also, when you apply liner afterwards, you’ll find it much easier to blend lipstick and liner so you don’t get a harsh line.

Always choose a liner from within the same colour family as your lipstick, by matching cool lipstick colours with cool lip liner tones, or warm with warm. Liners should match your lipstick perfectly, or be slightly darker.

Tips on applying lipstick so it lasts

1. First, apply lipstick with a lip brush, filling in your entire lip from top to bottom.

This will give you a more polished and long-lasting result.

2. Next, gently blot off any excess with a tissue. Then pat a little powder over your lips.

3. Now outline your lips, staying inside the lip colour. This settles the liner into the lipstick.

4. If you need to even out your lips, subtly extend liner above or below your natural lip line.
Once you get the shape you want, blend the liner into the lipstick, but only along the edges.

5. Apply a second coat of lipstick, again using your lip brush.

6. After you finish, stand back and check in the mirror to see if you notice any obvious lines. Noticeable lip liner went out in the 80’s, so don’t let hard lines give away your age.
Rather blend, blend, blend . . .
