Dressing for your unique body type: the 4 basic body shapes

No matter what shape you are, you can visually create the illusion of having ideal  proportions by making smart wardrobe choices and choosing the right fit, colour placement and accessories.

Hourglass (X shape or figure 8)

You need to show off your best asset, your waist. Opt for natural waistline styles.  Go for shaped, cinched, fitted feminine styles. Clothing styles that are too structured, boxy or loose don't suit you as they add extra bulk and hide your natural shape. Choose fabrics carefully, as you will want them to drape nicely over your curves.

Triangle (A shape)

Direct all the attention to your upper half; balancing your look with darker colour, plain and simple lines below the waist – with a bit of a flare at the hem to balance your hips.

On your top part, experiment with layering, interesting details, patterns, lighter or brighter colours and accessories to direct the eye upwards. V necklines and Basque waistlines (where the sides start at the Natural Waistline and drop down to a "V") are an excellent choice too to balance your "A" body shape.

Round (O shape)

Go for straight clothing lines throughout your style choices, keeping details away from your tummy area. Don't tuck in clothes or use colour blocking. Stay away from stiff, crisp fabric as they add extra volume. Never opt for a shaped, waist belted or natural waistline style as it will only serve to accent the thickness of the waist. Instead, go for dropped or asymmetrical waistlines, especially if you are short-waisted or wide hipped. Experiment with accessories.

Rectangle (H shape)

Create the illusion of a waist through form fitted styles, v necklines and adding interest at your lower half with the use of detailing, colour and accessories. Stay away from waist belted styles. Opt for structure and shape to follow your natural bodyline.
