Why do women choose organic cosmetics?

There are several reasons why women choose to use organic products. Mainly the decision stems from an awareness of the 3 main ways in which product ingredients can affect health.

A percentage of the ingredients will be absorbed into your system
Although the effects of exposure to cosmetic and dermalogical formulations cannot be precisely evaluated, a percentage will end up being absorbed by capillaries beneath the skin's surface, and then circulated through your body. Some say as much as 1.5 – 2kg each year.

Certain compounds are in fact more active when absorbed through the skin than when taken orally. This is why some drugs are administered via skin patches; including for example nicotine patches, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and various other slow release medications.

A group of researchers in 1999 at Stanford University found they were able to deliver a DNA vaccine to laboratory mice as effectively by rubbing it onto their skin as injecting it into muscle. The skin is after all the largest organ of the body.

Chemical formulations may contain toxins the body may struggle to eliminate
Professor Howard Maibach MD from the University of California, San Francisco, who has written and lectured extensively on dermatotoxicology (the toxicity to man from skin exposure), warns that up to 35% of applied sunscreen can pass through the skin and enter the bloodstream.

In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding the toxicity of some sunscreen ingredients, this is something that is already causing widespread concern. Largely because it can be difficult, if not impossible, for the human body to rid itself of artificial contaminants, so it ends up storing these in our cells. Not a very healthy thought.

Choosing organic reduces exposure to potentially harmful chemicals
With more than 170,000 synthetic chemical substances in use worldwide, it makes sense to reduce the use of chemicals in our homes and personal products. Not only can they have potentially harmful effects on us and our loved ones, but also on the environment.

Millions today are choosing to go the natural route. Your choice is up to you.
